You know how some people are SHOE people? Like, the Carrie Bradshaws of the world? I am not one of those people. I like shoes, yeah, but I’m not obsessed with them. I don’t have a closet stacked full of boxes, or pairs of perfectly-placed heels on strategic display. Still, I like to think I can spot a hot trend in footwear when I see one {;)} and I’m a firm believer that the phrase that best follows “new year, new me” is “new shoes”.  In that spirit, my predictions for THE shoes of 2016….Here are three must-have styles for the new year.

1. Suede over-the-knee boots.

I love a good pair of OTK boots. While they aren’t the most wearable option in footwear, they’re total show stoppers. A pair of stiletto thigh-high boots adds instant sex appeal to virtually any outfit, yes, but a flat or low-heeled version are stylish, luxe, and even a little badass. The 2016 iteration of the over-the-knee boot is suede and features a chunky heel–you’ve probably seen these ~$800 trend-igniting Stuart Weitzman boots on a myriad of celebrities, for example–but there are flat options that are just as hot {and less overtly erotic}. Though I’ve admittedly been lusting over the aforementioned SW boots, Steve Madden and Ivanka Trump have created styles with the same aesthetic at a fraction of the price so we can all ball on a budget. Score.

2. Lace-up ballet flats.

Sweet and sexy, lace-up flats are on the cusp of trendy right now, but will likely be everywhere this spring. Get in on the slightly-boho vibes early with a pair from Free People, Nine West, or Jeffrey Campbell. The unexpected lace-up detailing will add immediate interest while peeking out from under jeans, but will also become super sultry when paired with skirts and dresses as the seasons turn. Grabbing a pair in black is a safe and versatile bet, but I’m particularly enamored with cheetah print and nude lace-ups, either of which I would style as a neutral.

3. “Fashion” Sneakers.

A definite nod to the athleisure trend, a pair of sneakers reserved for out-of-gym use is a current wardrobe must. They can be worn cool girl or casual and are the perfect option for long days of shopping or city exploring. Look for a pair that’s understated and in a neutral hue–white, grey, and black are no brainers–but don’t be afraid to opt for a design with extra detail like contrast or quilting. The aim with a pair of “fashion” sneakers is not to steal the show with glitz or sparkle, but rather to subtly change the overall look of your outfit. It’s effortless. Chill. But still chic. Favorite picks by Nike, Adidas, and New Balance. {Make sure to check out THIS piece on how to style your sneakers for further sartorial inspiration!}

    • Love ankle boots! I think that they’ve become so universal that they aren’t even “trendy” any more…they’re more of a staple/must-have! ♡
