Leave it to Tumblr to provide me with random beauty education–today, I learned about the concept of “strobing”, which is actually something I’ve been doing unknowingly for the past year or two.

What the heck is it?

Using ONLY highlighter over a natural-looking base. You read that right: all highlight, no contour. Allegedly, the technique is loved by French women, “as they simply don’t believe that you must change your face to be beautiful.” Guys, I couldn’t agree more. Have you ever noticed how people who contour all kind of develop the same overall facial look? The Kardashian effect is real.

{Don’t get me wrong here though–contouring can be super dramatic and fab! But for the every day glam, I think strobing is the way to go.}

The careful OR casual application of an illuminator enhances your features and provides a lit-from-within glow year round. The right product will make you look radiant–not tan, not bronzed, not sparkly. Just pretty and, well, glowy! Trust me, it’s a good look. It’s especially awesome for summer, since it makes that lovely combination of sweat and shine look completely intentional. It’s “DEWY“, guys. You wish that the light bounced this flawlessly off your face.

Key strobing spots can include the inner corners of your eyes, brow bones, Cupid’s bow, center of the forehead, down the bridge of your nose, and atop the cheekbones. It also looks pretty on your shoulders and collarbones, if you’re so inclined. You can make the look as subtle or as dramatic as you wish, simply by varying the amount of highlighter you use.

If you’re looking to get in on the strobing action, here are a few products I recommend. I’m particularly obsessed with the L’Oreal True Match LUMI Liquid Glow Illuminator, which comes in three shades, each of which I discovered at Target earlier this week. I’ll do a review soon! Until then, trust that any and all of these products make excellent beauty bets.
