trend·y

ˈtrendē/

informal

adjective

  1. 1.

very fashionable or up to date in style or influence.

I’ll be the first to admit that the very concept of a “trendy workout” is a little odd. I mean, people have been participating in their favorite fitness modalities for…ever. Running, lifting, and general MOVEMENT aren’t going anywhere. Since most of us enjoy mixing it up from time to time, though, new fitness modalities are constantly popping up. Our favorite methods get makeovers. Old standbys get subtle shifts to fit the times. It’s a lot like fashion, actually. Workouts fade, fitness is forever, right? The latest trends in fitness are some of my favorite topics to explore, because in order for something to get a decent amount of media coverage, social shares, and ultimately, a dedicated following, the trend in question has to be innovative, interesting, and {generally} effective. I’m into ALL of that. You in? Here are four trendy workouts on my radar ATM, guaranteed to keep your fitness experience fresh.

Acro-Yoga

Though acro-yoga has been around for at least 16 years, it’s only recently become a super-trendy practice…probably because it looks really cool. It’s all over Instagram, in every yoga magazine, and popping up as a specialty class option in yoga studios across the country. As you have likely gathered from name alone, acro-yoga combines traditional yoga poses with acrobatics. It’s also a team sport: a typical acro-yoga practice will involve at least two participants–a base and a flyer {sometimes there’s a spotter, too!} The “base” yogi maintains the most contact with the ground and provides support for the “flyer”, who moves through a series of gravity-assisted, mid-air poses. No matter which position you hold, the workout requires strength, balance, patience, and trust. A favorite of yogi couples, it can also be super intimate and hot. Did I mention it looks really cool?! I’m a big fan of human body tricks, and acro-yoga is all about that life.

ModelFIT

Though a recent Betches Love This piece touted ModelFIT as complete BS, I’m unswayed in my curiosity for this new method. Based in NYC and billed as “a gym for models…and ordinary people,” by the New York Times, Justin Gelband’s ModelFIT has gotten a ton of press in recent months. In-person classes take place in the ModelFIT’s gym–a space that used to house notorious fashion photographer Terry Richardson’s studio. Victoria’s Secret Angels are fans. So chic. Like barre and pilates classes, ModelFIT workouts utilize teeny tiny isometric movements to create long, lean, defined muscles. Hand weights and ankle weights are also commonplace. It looks easy, but it’s actually super hard. That’s the s#!* I DO like. You can try a 20-minute online class HERE.

Morning Raving

Want to work out, but not FEEL like you’re working out? Love EDM? Like to get a little crazy? Still want to be healthy? Morning Raving might be your perfect match. Breakfast raves are apparently all the rage across the pond, with Morning Gloryville leading the exercise-meets-party pack. Participants swap late nights for early AM warehouse access where they can enjoy all of the comforts of a regular rave–think music, light shows, and ridiculous fashion–while smoothie bars and massages replace drugs and alcohol. Guys, this is actually my dream. Burn a massive amount of calories before work and get those endorphin flowing while taking in all of the positive raver vibes?! Yes, please.

BDSM Fitness

HAHA jokes!!! While this is totally a real thing, I find an hour on a treadmill self-inflicted torture enough for me. Of course, if you want to take a fitness class that’s taught by a real-life dominatrix and get your 50 shades of freak on, that’s your prerogative–the world {orrr the gym?} is your oyster. A myriad of BDSM-inspired workout classes and bootcamps are popping up at the moment, likely in an attempt to capitalize on the 50 Shades of Grey cache. If you go this route, you can  expect to push your limits, and probably to get yelled at a decent amount. Fun times!

What new workouts are you dying to try?!

xx,

Liza
