There are a lot of reasons to love winter: the holidays, sparkly cocktail dresses, Christmas lights, gingerbread lattes…Chapped lips, though, are definitely not one of them. Cold winter weather can wreak havoc on your pout, which is no bueno when it comes to kissing under the mistletoe, rocking the latest dark lippies, or, you know, just general comfort. Here’s how to keep your lips looking and feeling awesome all season.
–Balm it up. This is the most obvious tip ever, but it also seems to make the biggest and most instant difference. I’m one of those people who likes something glossy on my lips pretty much 24/7, but investing in a good balm is super important this time of year for maintaining the conditions of your lips. It’s cheap, it’s super low-maintenance, and you’ll feel and see effects instantaneously. My favorite brands for balm are EOS, Burt’s Bees, and Smackers.
–Dry brush. You already know that I’m obsessed with dry body brushing, but when it comes to giving my pout a little extra attention, dry brushing my lips is my go-to. You can use a $3 facial brush for this, or simply a toothbrush that you designate specifically for this purpose. Dry brushing will exfoliate and increase blood flow for a soft and sexy look. Do this before bed and add a lip treatment for maximum results!
–Overnight treatment. Overnight lip treatments have become so popular that they pretty much fill their own category of personal care products. While you can totally purchase a chichi treatment product, you can get equally amazing results from a natural product that you probably already have…coconut oil!! Apply a nice, thick layer of organic coconut oil to your lips right before bed and wipe off upon waking. You’ll start your day with ultra-moisturized, healed lips. Serious lip disaster? Substitute petroleum jelly for coconut oil in the above routine for two nights. Even the most chapped, painful lips will be restored and beautiful ASAP.
–Sugar scrub. DIY or BUY a sugar scrub for exfoliation and sweetness! Chapped, peeling winter lips are so gross–this is the perfect weekly solution! If you’re going the DIY route, combine brown sugar, coconut oil, and a drop or two of honey and mix. Apply the scrub to your lips and massage firmly to slough off dead skin. Leave on for a minute or two for extra moisturizing, or simply wipe off with a damp washcloth. If you’d rather buy a pre-made scrub, BLISS, Fresh, and LUSH make great options.
